Diet plays an important role in the management of diabetes mellitus. Proper diet ( ADA diet is usually recommended) controls blood glucose and improves cardiovascular risk. Now comes a study showing that a vegan diet is actually superior to ADA diet for diabetics.

A team of investigators led by Dr. Barnard from the George Washington University recently published their findings in the journal Diabetes Care (August 2006). This study was funded by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and by the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation. The authors did not include exercise as part of the protocol so as to determine the effect of diet alone.
